An email from Lil'M has reminded me that I mentioned previously that I would talk about NB's job hunting escapades.
When we first arrived, NB accepted a job that he wasn't all that impressed about. Which sounds like a bad idea, but at the time he was so sick of looking for work and not earning any money. Although he wanted to be a contractor, there just weren't the roles around. So he accepted this permanent role. When he was offered the role, they offered it with considerably less money than what it had been advertised at.
So that was the first point of realising they were an arsehole company to work for.
They then advised they didn't have the budget for a permanent staff member. Therefore, NB would work as a contractor for the first month. However, he would not be paid contractor wages, he would just be paid what he would get paid as a permanent. Without annual leave, sick leave or pension (super) contributions.
Second point of realising they were an arsehole company to work for.
At the end of each month, they would say they still don't have budget, so the month contract rolled on. At the end of the 3rd month NB contacted HR to tell them they needed to either pay him more or start accruing annual leave etc for him. They didn't respond and did neither.
Third point of realising they were an arsehole company to work for.
One of his colleagues started the same day as NB. Although, because this guy replaced someone else, they had the budget for him and he was permanent. He quit in his second week. But, because his contract said he had to give a 3 month notice period, he had to stay there that long. NB and this guy would compare notes on how awful this arsehole company was. NB's notice period was 2 weeks, even though he was only on a 1 month contract that continually rolled on.
It was now the fourth month he had been working there. It was the last week of his contract. They were drawing up one for the 5th month. The talk of NB going permanent was continually promised but never delivered.
He decided he wasn't signing up for another month and was no longer going to take their crap. I was very happy to hear this.
On the Thursday he advised arsehole company that he wasn't signing another contract. Therefore, he was finishing the next day.
So in the end, their arsehole tactics bit them in the arse. They weren't happy, but hey, if you play like that you've got to expect it.
I'll save the job hunting antics for another post.
