Have been advised by several people that it is very difficult to open a bank account in the UK. You need a multitude of documents, usually including a UK utility bill, which ends up being a bit of a catch-22.
How can you get a bill - if you can't get a place - as you haven't got a job - and need a bank account to have a job anyway?
Fortunately HSBC have come to the party with enabling you to set up bank accounts before you arrive in the UK. Got a letter from them today welcoming me as a potential customer. How nice of them. Charmed, I'm sure.
Apparently banks aren't despised as much over there as they are in Oz - maybe cause they don't charge you for using other banks ATMs like they do here - thieves! - oops, I mean lovely employer.
