Winchester

Grandpa had a nurse in hospital who was from Winchester in England. He used to call her "Winchester Cathedral" and they got along like a house on fire. Apparently there was a song about Winchester Cathedral in the sixties and Grandpa would sing a tune from it when we were there.

I really wanted to go to the Cathedral for Grandpa, so we went this weekend.

We made the trek down there by train, which should normally take an hour, but they had a replacement bus service for part of the way because of engineering works. This actually turned out quite good, as we got to see more of the towns.

I discovered that Jane Austen is buried in the Cathedral, so I was worried there would be a lot of tourists.

Winchester Cathedral is absolutely beautiful. I lit a candle for Grandpa and we sat in a pew for a little while alone with our thoughts.

We took a tour of the Cathedral, which was interesting. It has a really fascinating history. We then wandered around the town, which was lovely. We went and saw Jane Austen's house. The town wasn't too busy, so it was nice to be able to wander around freely.

I just wish we had gone earlier so I could have let Grandpa know that we went. Althought it's best not to have regrets.

We went to Banbury and Oxford last weekend also. I will talk about that another time. I have posted photos of all trips.
